Day 17 SA - Lima to Nasca

Today was pretty much a travel day. We are to get picked up at our hotel at 12:30 so it gave us the morning to do something. Dawson went for a run and on his return we headed back to the grocery store to get some snacks for the bus ride.

We were back at the hotel for our pickup at 12:30 and we were off. Prior to going to the bus station we picked up an additional member of the tour, Carol is a fellow Canadian, who is just about to start a 3 week tour through Peru and with her husband. Carol had wanted to see the Nasca line prior to the tour. We were at the bus station with lots of time our contact from Gadventure set us up with tickets and we were off on the bus.

The bus we were on is high end, double decker, nice seats, movies, Wifi and dinner. The bus trip was excellent in itself, it provided us another view of Peru. For the 1st half of the 8 hour ride it was along the coast south of Lima. Desert on the east side and the Pacific on the west. We had not realized how much desert there was in Peru. It is interesting to see the greenery around a river valley although most of the rivers are dry and the wet season is just ending in the mountains. Sometimes there is suddenly a patch of green due to irrigation. it looks weird amongst the brown and grey backdrop. At the town of Pisco (where the drink got it's name) the highway turns inland. Now it was desert on both sides. One has to wonder what supports the communities we see along the way. Mining? On occasions there are green lines along the dry water coarse, but it quickly turns to brown. We also saw the company Praxair set up. Julie took this photo for her brother Mark as he works for Praxair in Sarnia.

We also see many, many, shanty towns. Without the need for heat, bug control, or protection from rain, anything seems to suffice as shelter.

By 6 pm it is dark and we make the rest of the journey working on the blog. Entertainment is provided on the bus through tv but the selection of movies is questionable, with one being on the level of disturbing.

At 9:20 we are at Nasca where we retrieve our bags and our met by our guide. It proves to be a short walk to our hotel from the bus station so within 20 mins we are sitting in the hotel garden enjoying a nice cold cervesus, which are good everywhere we go. The hotel has a beautiful garden featuring a pool and mango tree with a hammock. We are off to bed at 11 looking forward to our flight over the Nazca lines in the morning. Nasca is spelled both ways with a z or s there were signs with both spellings through the area.
