Day 202, Friday January 10th – a day of hanging out

Day 202, Friday January 10th – a day of hanging out
Woke up around 7:30 and started off sharing an excellent cup of coffee in the cockpit.  Plan for the day was to do some work on the boat till noon then head to shore for a hike around Black Point and pick up some groceries.  But as all things with cruising, the plan was subject to weather and the prospect of rain changed Dawson’s plans.  He had planned on completing the varnish work on the bow sprit but with the possibility of rain this was not a good plan.

Around 9:30 we head into shore to do some shopping, figuring that the storekeeper has had a chance to stock the shelf.  It turned out to be a good trip with some fruit and vegetables and even yoghurt; an excellent excursion.  Dawson heads out for a run after the shopping and has a good 10 k run.  He followed the beach along the eastern shore up to the north end of the island.  By 11 Dawson is back on board.  Julie is still working on sewing the fender bag and it is starting to take shape.  This will be an excellent addition to the boat as the fenders currently occupy the stern rail seats when not in use.  Julie adds the tie straps to the bag and the first one is on the rail.

We have a lunch of egg salad and head to the shore for a hike around.  There are a couple of things to see, a blow hole along the eastern shore, a house built in the style of a sandcastle and the “Garden of Eden”, which according to the sign at the dock is a “Cruisers Must See”.   First stop is the at the town water spout where we fill up our water bottles and off we go in the mid-day sun.   It is quite hot making us wonder what the temperature is like here in the summer.  We head over to the eastern shore in search of the blow hole.  We miss it on our first pass but see it on the return trek.  The hole is blowing a bit but the waves are not high enough to get any real height on the spout, today it is about 2’ high.  Next on the list is the Sand Castle house.  We only have a vague idea of its location so we head to the west end of Black Point and then to the south.  We don’t locate the Sand Castle house but do see the “Garden of Eden” a goat farm and the Diesel Power Generating Station, all very exciting.  The Garden of Eden is a collection of driftwood and rocks whose shape has inspired the owner to bring them back to his yard. After this exciting hike we have to head back to the boat for a rest.  Well Dawson rests and Julie starts working on fender bag #2.

Late in the afternoon Dawson does get going on blogging and then it is time to head into shore for the BBQ at Lorraine’s Restaurant.  This was chatted up at the Thursday happy hour so we expected to see a number of people there.  This was not to be there were about 20 people total.  The meal was excellent ribs, chicken, fish fingers, coleslaw, crab salad, peas and rice, and mac and cheese.  All self serve this meal was then followed by desert cupcakes, a great meal for $18.

We head back to the boat for coffee and a game of Kings Cribbage and Dominos and then head off to bed.  However we are shocked to find out as we are getting ready for bed that it is only 7:45 so we stay up for a bit reading.  The cruising life is a very simple one.
For all people planning on sailing in this area a stop in Black Point is well worth it.  It is a good place to stop do your laundry and re-supply, the people are great and very accommodating for the cruisers.  The anchorage offers excellent holding and is covered for N to E to S winds.

Cheers Dawson and Julie
