Day 315, Saturday May 3rd, a great day to be in Beaufort!

Day 315, Saturday May 3rd, a great day to be in Beaufort!

Boat building competition
Dawson heads out for his morning run into town, as a recognizance mission.  He comes back with a full report of where everything is etc.  By 10:00 Julie has got herself in gear and the 2 of us head in to downtown to catch the farmers market, Nautical Museum, and the start of boat building competition.  It is a beautiful day to wander the quaint town.  The farmers market is small and we are trying to eat down our inventory so no purchases are made.  The nautical museum is excellent.  There is a special exhibit related to the wooden boat show that is on.

After checking out the start of the boat building competition where there are 14 teams of 2 that are given plans and lumber supplies and 4 hours to build a boat that they will then launch and race against each other, we head to lunch at Sprouters.

Lunch is good but near the end of it Julie spots something floating in the water.  It gets closer and closer and we look through our big camera lense and decide that it is a horse carcass bobbing along.  Luckily we are done lunch as it is getting closer and as we leave we hear a comment about an odor.

We head back to the boat building to see how things are progressing.  It all looks good as they rush around cutting and glueing and siliconing seams.  We head out to the wooden boat displays where there are absolutely beautiful old boats and new boats all made out of wood.

It is now time to go see the racing of the boats which have just been built.  We have been told the race iw quite entertaining and sure enough it is.  Heats of 3 boats at a time have to row out to a line and back again.  Some people don’t seem to know how to row very well, others lose there oar locks or they break so end up moving their boats like standup paddleboarders.  As they race you can see some boats starting to take on water and wallow.  Overall there were 2 boats that sank completely and a few that looked like bathtubs but made their circuit.  All in all some good clean fun to spectate.

It is now early evening so we head back to the boat for dinner and a quiet night.

Cheers

Julie and Dawson
