Day 160 – Another Fine Fishing Day
Up early again, coffee in the cockpit, the start to another beautiful
day. It was windy again but this is the 3rd
night at anchor so we had no worries about dragging. White Sound gives protection for 360 degrees
so we can sleep easily. Unfortunately
the motor yacht anchored just to the north of us cannot say the same thing. They dragged during the night causing a fair
bit of excitement at 4 am. The owner says it was a “soft” grounding.
After coffee Dawson heads into the beach for a run. He heads up to the north part of the island
and as it is low tide he is able to run around the north headland along the beach. The route provides some beautiful scenery. We are
heading fishing at 11 so it is back to the boat to pick up Julie and then back
to the Marina to meet our driver Catharine.
Pat fishing the surf |
We meet Pat and Diana at our fishing beach. Conditions
are the same as yesterday but the tide is lower.
Diane is better prepared for today’s fishing having brought a chair. We have our lines in the surf within a couple
minutes of arrival, with Pat close behind.
Within 5 minutes Pat has landed a fish, (we forget what kind) and then
Julie lands a Schoolmaster which is a type of snapper. We continue to fish for about an hour with a few bites but no more fish.

Panaorama of the "fishing beach" |
Julie with Dorado |
We head back to the boat for lunch. When we arrive at the Green Turtle dock
another set of fishermen are getting ready to clean their catch, 3
Dorados. Julie poses with one for fun,
the fisherman tells her to hold it as far out in front of her as she can so it
looks bigger. He says that is an old
guide trick. We should have done that
with our early catches.
Julie and Linda on Coco Beach |
Coral shore on Atlantic side of Cay |
After lunch we decide it is time for a walk. We head back to the marina and see if anyone
wants to join us. We catch Linda from
Blue Moon who is playing Candy Crush on her IPad so we tell her she must come for
the walk. We head out around 2 and cover
the same area that Dawson had done his run, only now the tide is higher and
we end up doing some bushwhacking. It is
a great walk along the shore. We decide
we will try and visit a fellow Canadian, Kevin, who had given us a ride earlier in our
stay on the island. Kevin is from
Toronto but has been in the Bahamas for 35 years now.
Kevin's roof trusses |
Kevin is building a house not too far from Coco Beach. We locate Kevin's
quickly and find Kevin working on an outboard engine he had just
bought. At 1st hellos we can
tell he has no idea who we are so we quickly fill in the details of how we
meet. Kevin takes us for the tour of the
home along with its story. It is still
under construction but is closed in allow Kevin to work on it while living
there. Kevin started the house about 8
years ago and has been working on it single handed, the only help he has had
was when he was placing the roof trusses into position. The lay out of the home is great, the views
are great, from the top floor you see both the Atlantic Ocean and the Sea of
Abaco, but it is the roof trusses and the floor that make the house. They are yellow pine, the roof trusses are
more a work of art – simple but elegant, the colour of the wood shows up
well. Kevin tells us he is just getting
back into working on the home as he has just returned from 3 years of working
on a friends timber framed home in Canada near Fenelon Falls. After the tour we sit and chat for awhile learning
a bit about the Abacos and then realize it is time to get back as it is getting
dark.
A quick 10 minute walk and we are back at the marina, we
join the other sailors for a drink at the Green Turtle Bar and we head back to
the boat for dinner. Dawson cooks
tonight preparing an excellent meal of sausages and rice, not as good as one of
Julie’s meal but good none the less. We
send Cathrine a note that we are going to take a rain check on our plans to
head to Pineapples Bar and Grill and make a early night of it.
Cheers
Dawson and Julie
