Day 167 Friday, December 6th

Day 167, Friday December 6th, Hopetown

Bay at Hopetown with lighthouse in background
We got an early start today as we still had the bikes rented until 1 o’clock.   We had covered most of the island yesterday so decided to head over to the peninsula that houses the candy striped lighthouse.  We went only about 2 kms. and came to a dead end.  We double back to see if we had missed the road, but had not.  We found someone to ask and he informed us that you can only get to the lighthouse by boat.  Oh well, guess we won’t get there by bike.  We headed back to town and found a few roads to explore with a few shops and the museum.  We returned the bikes a bit early and did some bumbling around for Christmas stuff, but the pickings were very slim.
Dawson at the art centre
We spend the afternoon poolside at the Hopetown Inn and Marina resort.  Reading and socializing.  Dawson finds a bean bag toss game and the competition is on with Rosemary and John.  Team J (Julie and John) take the title.  The resort manages the mooring ball we have taken and it entitles us to use the property which is great.  For $20 a night we have internet (bad internet), and use of the pool and laundry facilities, and games.  The guests here are paying $1500 a week so our $20 is a deal.

John and Rosemary for the great bean bag toss
Today is the start of the Hopetown country music festival that we have come to see.  We have an early dinner so we can get over to the venue for 7:30.  The music starts promptly at 8, and John and Rosemary have secured a table for the group of us that has been connecting.  The seats are excellent and the music is good.  The performers are the song writers and have all penned number 1 C&W hits.  We would not normally embrace country music, but entertainment is scarce and the event is free except for a donation.  The entertainers are actually songwriters and supposedly the cream of the crop of country writers.  Some of them are better singers than others, but overall it was excellent.  The venue was outdoors, and poolside, no bugs and about a 22 degree temperature.  Doesn’t get any better than that.  We stay for the full show which features the Bartender getting up and performing.  One of the song writes is from Elbow Cay so has a good feel for the talent on the island.  We are back to the boat by midnight, quite late for us.

Cheers
