Day 32 Wed. July 24
Another morning waking up in Snug Harbour. We decide to stay another day as the only
other anchorage we consider is hosting the trailer sailors so may be quite
crowded.
We are able to contact the Herterich’s which is Jason’s
parents whom Kevin was roommates with at University and travelled through
Thailand with. Jason’s parents Diane and
Rainer actually located our boat for us last August after we had mentioned to
them we were shopping for a Caliber 40 LRC. We had chatted to them July 19th
when we were both picking up our young men at the Toronto airport upon their
return from their Thailand adventure.
Shortly thereafter they were anchored in Thomas Bay and saw Jazzebelle
and went over to ask the owners if they were considering selling in the next
year and explained to them that we had never even sailed on a Caliber so they
provided their contact information to be passed on to us and would at least
take us for a sail.
Diane and Rainer sailed into Snug to join us at around
lunchtime. They have a Niagara 35 which
they have sailed for many years and had rafting up with us down to a
science. A few lines were tossed and
soon we were chatting up a storm and nibbling on lunch. We admired each others boats. Rainer had a great system for securing his
boat that we are going to look at getting to complement our davit system. Rainer is also a fisherman so he was keen on
testing Snug for fish. There were lots
spotted, but none seemed to be biting.
Diane, Julie and Ila went for a nice swim prior to Happy
Hour which was hosted on Mist, Ben and Ila’s Jeanneau. The cockpit is huge and 10 of us fit quite
nicely and munched back numerous appetizers.
Ila make some rice paper wrapped veggie rolls, which were
excellent. I wish we had taken a picture
because they looked like condom wrapped veggies so lots of conversation
surrounded eating them.
After Happy hour we moved back to our own boats to cook
dinner. Again not very hungry, but
munched back a meal anyways. After dinner
we headed over to Blue Marlin with our charts to pick Diane and Rainer’s brains
about the east shore of Georgian Bay.
30,000 islands is a lot of islands to sail around. We have sailed this coast once before, but
went outside in the deep bay vs. exploring around the islands. We are hoping to
explore a bit more this time, so good to be able to get some local advice. Diane and Rainer keep their boat in the Parry
Sound area, so have boated the 30,000 islands for years.
At the close of the evening which had cooled down we gawked
at the sky for 15 minutes, lots of stars and a clear night. Due to the coolness there were also no
mosquitoes which is very, very nice.
Cheers Julie and Dawson
