Day 193, Wednesday Jan. 1 2014
Happy New Year’s everyone.
Junkanoo float |
Well the day started out with some concern as Kevin and
Casey had not returned by 7:30 when we got our day moving. No reason for concern as it was an all night
event they went to and they had a local tour guide but moms just worry. We decided to head to Starbucks for coffee
and hope to do some posting, however their internet did not work. Soon the young tourists returned so we
organized the boat to set sail. We left
dock around 10 or so heading for Allen Cay.
The winds were on our nose unfortunately and there was a bit of nervous
tension being in new waters that have coral heads. A dolphin popped by early in the trip but did
not stay. Only Julie and Casey got to
see it for a split second.
Enjoying the sun with our Xmas gift exchange |
After about 2 hours of bashing into the waves, Dawson
detected a leak in the stuffing box.
This is not good. The bilge was
pumping out any volume of water, however not knowing if it would get worse we
decided to head back to Nassau. We ran a
few tests on the RPM’s and at lower RPM’s it was not leaking. It took another 2 hours to get back to port
where we pulled into the spot we had just left.
A bit disappointing but Dawson felt he could fix the problem and we
would be on our way tomorrow so no use getting a slip at Atlantis as we would
not be able to play at the waterpark.
Casey in a special chair at Froggies |
We launch the dinghy and Julie, Kevin and Casey decide to go
for a tour of the harbour. We start with
Atlantis but there is nowhere to leave the dinghy so we head over to the
downtown portion of the waterfront. We
stop at “Froggies” bar and have some chips and a beer. The music is upbeat and we enjoy people
watching. We also parked the dinghy
right where we could watch it. We
actually had to climb up to the restaurant on a rather stinky floating dock and
ladder. There was a rope of conch still
alive sitting on the dock which were waiting to be moved along the restaurant
assembly line. We then decided to head
to the beach just to the west of the restaurant. It looked like a private beach attached to a
hotel, but in Bahamas all beaches are public up to the high watermark. We tossed a football around and cooled off in
the calm waters and then headed back to the mothership. The dinghy ride itself was fun as the waves
were medium but traffic high. We passed
within a couple hundred yards of the large cruise ships.
Upon our return Dawson reported that he “thinks” he has had
success with the repair by reversing the set screws (as recommended by the
manuals). We will confirm the next day
when we put her through the RPM test. We
have a swim in the pool and start the dinner ritual followed by euchre and an
early bedtime as we only had about 2 hours of sleep the night before/afternoon.
Cheers
Julie and Dawson
