Day 203, Saturday January 11th – Another day of hanging
out – it is what cruisers do
Woke up to another gorgeous morning, we both have a hard
time calling this time of year winter, although it has rained many nights only
during the night. We call them rinses
although the boat gets a bit stuffy with all the hatches and portholes closed
during the night. Same plan as
yesterday, some work on the boat a look around and happy hour. It is a very simple life we lead.
After breakfast Julie starts on sewing the 2nd
fender storage bag and Dawson moves on to varnishing the bow sprit, the job
which was put off yesterday due to rain.
Once the varnishing is done Dawson turns to replacing the electrical
motor in the forward head vent fan, Kevin had brought down one from Canada. By 12 both Dawson’s jobs are done. We had a quick lunch and Dawson heads off for
a run while Julie continues work on the fender bag.
Dawson’s run for the day, he heads south along the Kings
Highway which runs for a total of 4 kms, but provides a very interesting
venue. The island of Giant Guano is
about 15 km long by 2 km wide but just south of the village of Black Point it narrows
to about 500 meters. In 2008 there was
work started on placing a resort at this narrow point allowing development on
both the Exuma Sound and Exuma Bank sides of the island, but with the financial
crash all work was stopped. There are
still billboards showing the plans and some rusting construction equipment but
not really much else. The view in both
directions as still excellent so maybe some time in the future work will
continue. It is a shame all the
equipment is getting all rusted out as it takes a lot of effort just to get
supplies and equipment to the islands.
Dawson is back on the boat around 2 and finds Julie relaxing
after a hard day of sewing. We read for
a bit and then head in to post a blog and see what is happening at the local
bar. Turns out it is football game day
with the New Orlean Saints taking on the Seattle Seahawks. This is good for two reasons; 1 the beer is
$3 each and 2, Dawson has been wearing a Settle Seahawks hat for the last year
and this will be the 1st game he has seen. Along the whole trip people have been saying
it is Seattle’s year and they certainly looked like it in the one game we
watched. We watch the game with a couple
from Moncton and a fellow from Owen Sound.
We head back to the boat for dinner, an excellent thai stir
fry, a game of Kings Cribbage and Dominos a coffee and off to bed.
Cheers
Dawson and Julie
