Day 201, Thursday Jan 9th – Mail boat day at Black Point
We again wake up to a beautiful day. The plan is to do some chores around the boat
and nip into town once the mail boat comes in and has dropped off some
supplied.
Mail boat with supplies |
Julie is working on a bag for storage of the fenders along
the stern rail and Dawson returns to the project of sanding the bow sprit for
re-varnishing. Both these jobs have been
planned for a long time but have not been completed. We have decided to hang out here for a week
as we have been on the move a fair bit.
We decide about mid morning to move the boat closer to the
south side of the bay, to provide better access to the shore along with
improved wi fi, however just as we plan to make the move we see the mail boat
coming in. We decide to make the move
once the boat is along the dock. The
arrival of the mail boat causes a fair bit of excitement on the dock so we head
in to check it out. It is a neat scene
with everyone picking up the items they have ordered from Nassau: fruits and
vegetables, groceries, building supplies and even two new bikes for two of the
young children. The bikes are late
Christmas presents for the children and they are grinning ear to ear. The young lads eyes are as big as saucers as
he pushes his bike through the crowd.

We head into the grocery store but the supplies have yet to
be unpacked and priced so we head over to the local bar, Scorpios for happy
hour. There is now talk that there is a
2nd boat coming in so even more supplies. The bar is packed with cruisers, with only a
sprinkling of locals. We partake in the
rum punch for the 1st drink and then wisely move over to beer for
the next one. It is the 1st
cruiser bar we have been to and it is quite the scene. We speak with a bunch of other cruisers from
1st timers like ourselves to the ones who have been doing it for 20
years.
Around 6 we leave the bar and notice that some of the
cruisers are lined up at the supermarket.
This is in our opinion bad form, as the store owners have lots of work
to do before starting to sell stuff from the boat that just unloaded. We hope that they realize this and leave to
come back in the morning. Black Point
does alot for us cruisers free garbage drop off, free water, free wi fi, it
just does not seem right to push for service after 5 pm.
The trip back to the boat was good although with 30 boats at
anchor it took a couple of minutes to pick out Jazzebelle. We finish off the excellent Tuna Casserole,
have a game of king’s cribbage and an exciting game of dominos and off to bed.
Cheers
Dawson and Julie
