Day 67, Wednesday August 28th A sail to niece

Day 67, Wednesday August 28th

Brother Mark and Roma (mom) send off visit
Roma gives us a ride down to the docks and Mark meets up with us to say goodbye.  It takes about an hour to organize and get through our take-off check list and then we are saying goodbye and heading out.

The slip is very narrow but once again we are off the dock with no issues.  As soon as we get in the river there is a freighter honking at us.  We duck into the Sarnia Bay to stay out of the freighters way and hug the shore.  We are under motor as the winds are on the nose basically again.  Julie is a bit anxious with the current, freighters, and no safe harbours.  We pass Ethyl which is where Julie's dad and brother worked for many years.  A freighter passed us and we radioed to find out if our AIS was working.  The captain confirmed we were transmitting and they were aware of us many miles in advance.  For some reason we are not showing up on our marine traffic software.  Another glitch to figure out.  Julie is also busy organizing the boat and decorating with a few new pics.

Julie at the helm.  Notice how close the freighters are.

Freighter pushing lots of water
We go under a couple sets of hydro wires which is a bit freaky.  Our mast is 55 feet so we need to be on the alert that we fit under all this stuff.  Finally the winds and our direction shift sufficiently that we can sail across Lake St. Clair.  Most of the marinas that are on the Detroit River don't seem to have sufficient water for us to access them according to some of the books and charts we have on board.  We finally get hold of a marina in Windsor that can accommodate so we head there by 6:30 in the evening.  We give our niece Gillian a call and she and her boyfriend who we had not met were able to join us for a nightcap.  Glad we were able to hook up as it has been many years since we have managed to visit together.
