Day 71, Sunday Sept. 1 2013

Day 71, Sunday Sept. 1 2013

Yeah, a good nights sleep, although the wind did whip up again.  We were glad we were in a slip.  We decide to stay another day as it sounds like the Bass Islands are all booked up.  (Bass Islands just south of Pelee on the American side).  We are going to go for a dinghy ride over to lighthouse point.  It is overcast and does not look like a great day, but it is supposed to improve.

Our dolphin friend
We set off around 11:00 and dinghy to a sandy cove on the west side of the north peninsula.  We are hoping to be able to access a path from here over to the lighthouse.  On the way into the beach we hit the prop on 2 occasions.  Ouch.  Julie is on watch but the water is murky and you can’t see bottom.  After the second hit we pull up the motor and dip the paddle to see the depth and are shocked that it is only about 12 inches and we could not see the bottom and yet we are 50 feet offshore.  Alex jumps out and pushes us to shore.  We don’t find a path but we find an inflated blue dolphin that has washed up on shore.  We are very accepting of giving the dolphin a lift back to civilization.

Back in the dinghy, as we will have to motor around the point and hope there is a decent landing spot for us.  As we round the point the waves are bigger and Dawson has to be careful on his manoevers so that we don’t get wet.  We land okay, but the motor will not stay in the up position, perhaps something got bent when we hit bottom.  Alex manages a MacGiver stick to do the job and all is well.  The hike is short and the lighthouse is pretty, but soon enough we are back in the dinghy with the blue dolphin and heading back to the boat with our picnic lunch in tow.  As we pull into the marina a women on the tall ship starts yelling to us.  Finally we understand she is asking about the blue dolphin.  She lost one 3 weeks ago that was her young sons and he is very sad, "did we find it"?  So we found a happy home for the dolphin to its rightful owners.

We decide to spend the afternoon going for a swim and a walk along the pier.  The beach is beside the marina and only Julie and Alicia head in.  It is a lovely temperature and the sun has turned the day into a beauty.  We only last on the beach for a few minutes.  The guys are not beach sitters.  On the pier is a tall ship and a sailboat that has been damaged by rubbing along the pier.  Ouch! We wander down the street and find a giant jenga game and decide a pitcher of beer and game of jenga are in order.  Well one game leads to another and we needed another pitcher of beer and next thing you know our afternoon was gone.  We had lots of fun as other visiting the island also joined into our game.  By now it was 7:00 and time to cook up some grub.

Again there was a sequence challenge but this time we would rotate partners to find the weakest link.  Unfortunately Julie lost all 3 of her games and was crowned the weakest link.  We said good-night, but it was muggy out so sleep did not come easily.  We were each reading, and googling on our own until midnight and listening for the wind outside.

Cheers

Julie and Dawson
