Leamington Marina-very very nice |
Day 72, Monday Sept 2nd 2013
Awoke to an overcast day at Scudders
Marina. It doesn’t take long for the
marina to start clearing out as it is the end of the holiday weekend. We leave around 10 o’clock for the 13 mile
cruise back to Leamington as our guest Alex and Alicia must return to the
working world. The winds have picked up
from when we woke up and are now about 12 knots out of the North West. We just hope there is enough west in the wind
to allow us to sail to Leamington which is almost due north of Pelee
Island. We have quite enjoyed our stay
at Pelee and would recommend it to others as a nice spot to spend a weekend.
Snake along the shoreline at boardwalk |
We are out of the marina nicely and have
the main out just after clearing the outer breakwall. We get the Genoa up minutes later and our
cruising our coarse line around 5.5 knots.
Looks like will be a good sail.
We have an issue with the float switch on the bilge pump so Dawson
removes the switch to look at it. We
will have to get a new one, we will have to see what is available on a holiday
Monday in Leamington, if not we will pick one up at our next port of call
Erieau. The winds stay steady around the
12 knot range and allow us to sail the whole trip, which is a good way to end
the visit of our guests. Alicia was
somewhat concerned after her recent experience at anchor on Friday but under
sail she is alright. At 12:30 we are
tied up at the Leamington Municipal Marina, a fairly new marina which is well
set up complete with WiFi.
Turtle along shore |
The four of us head out for lunch and 3 of
us enjoy a burger, fries and beer for $9 at the Waterfront Bar and Grill just
minutes away from the Marina. On the
walk over we spot a number of turtles and snakes sunning themselves on the
rocks along the harbour. After lunch it
is time for Alex and Alicia to head back to the real world, they drop us off at
the Rio Can center just north of the Marina for us to run some errands if
possible on a holiday Monday. To our joy
every store is open, we have 3 main items to get
1.
a bilge pump float switch –
secured at Canadian Tire
2.
groceries – picked up at the
Metro
3.
our 3rd Twinrix
prescription – sourced at the Walmart Pharmacy.
The pharmacist Walmart asked if we had been traveling the last while as
the prescription is from Sudbury, the 1st shot was purchased in
Sarnia and the 2nd from Kamloops BC.
A good one stop shopping spot for us
boaters. We then head back to the boat
to install the float switch, clean up a bit and start blogging.
Julie blogging in the cockpit |
We really enjoyed having Alex and Alicia with us for a few days. One of the funny things this weekend was Alex calling the
yelling window, the shouting hole. We
have nicknames for most things and areas in the boat. Having nicknames for everything takes away some of
the confusion. Initially we did not know
where we had stowed stuff and even if one of us did know where something was
but they were trying to describe where on the boat it was the description took
forever. This frustration has
contributed to a Julie meltdown. We now
have a pump locker, a propane locker, an electronic basket, and the “yelling
window” which is the plastic on the dodger between the cockpit and the foredeck
so when we are coming into or out of port or anchoring we can hear each other
better when communicating. Hence the
“yelling window”. That is why when Alex
called it the “shouting hole” it seemed hilarious to us. Thanks guys for a great visit.
Cheers
Dawson and Julie
