Day 221, Wednesday, January 29th
The outboard engine saga continues. The lack of success in correcting the cooling
system is starting to annoy Dawson. We
also need the outboard as the dinghy is like our car and of all towns
Georgetown where we are is very spread out so it is crucial to have a
dinghy. The town itself is surrounded
by half a mile of 3 foot depth so you can’t get close to town. Most of the anchorages are a mile to 2 kms.
away from supplies. We also chose to
anchor at a further beach from where all the activities are and the winds are
kicking up 15 miles an hour so it is not inviting to kayak anywhere as one of
the directions would be a lot of work.
Julie tried hitchhiking a lift over to the beach for yoga this morning
but no one answered her radio call which was disappointing.
Dawson and neighbour Eric went in search of a NAPA parts
store and it took 4 hours to do a round trip including some walking around and
they were not able to get the part they wanted.
Upon returning to the mothership at 1:00, Dawson then took our sick
dinghy to town to talk further to the mechanic.
Luck would have it one of the mechanics was willing to look at it. Yesterday the owner of the shop indicated
they don’t work on Merc outboards.
Supposedly a blockage has been cleared and with a few more
parts it may be able to be fixed. Dawson
returned at 4:00 but the engine was not running any better in his opinion.
Julie spent the day cleaning, cooking and learning
French. The rosetta program is going
well although it is time to kick it up a notch.
The first CD took almost 3 months to get through and now there are 3
more CD’s so the goal is to get through a CD per month. So far so good. A commitment of about 10 hours per week
should work, which doesn’t sound like much but that is still 2 hours a day 5
days a week.
Cheers
Julie and Dawson
